Dirt Hole Set
Trapping tips and technics to catch coyotes from Larry Emans with Emans Trapping Supplies Dirt Hole Set A well-made dirt hole set will catch any fox, raccoon, opossum, coyote, bobcat or skunk that comes along. For that reason, my favorite set is a dirt hole set when trapping on land. A good habit for trapping is to be prepared. Have all your trapping equipment cleaned, dyed and waxed before season starts. Depending on how you prepare your traps, you will need time for your paint or dye to lose its odor. And it less stressful not to be scrambling for misplaced items. Before season starts, to be more successful, scouting is a great opportunity to set yourself to have more animals in your traps. Putting traps in the ground where there aren’t any coyotes is somewhat a waste of time if you’re trying to be efficient. Set on sign. Be where the animals travel. Look for footprints and scat. Game cameras are also a good tool. Once you’re in the area. Choose the set that best fits the situation. The dirt holes set can be used almost anywhere. Dig your trap bed slightly bigger than your trap, you want it to bed in solid. Once you have the dirt hole, anchor your trap. Pull on the anchor to be sure it is secure. Now bed the trap into place. I use underalls, fiberglass pan covers or wax paper to prevent dirt and rocks from getting under the trap pan. Sift 1” of dirt over the trap with the lowest spot being over the trap pan. Next place a bait hole in front of the trap. I prefer to have it 6-9 inches from my trap slightly off center to the left or right. I dig it about 9 inches deep at an angle to make the coyote work the set. Place your Lenon Lure bait in the hole. I use a little sheep’s wool to hold the lure. Shove it to the back of the hole. Next, I take my Lenon Lure Coyote All Call and place a small amount at the base of the hole. To finish it off I pour urine on the backside of the hole away from the trap. Now we wait. Come back the next day and know your time and effort will pay off in time. Goodluck on the trapline.
